Want to attend Learning Alternatives?

Learning Alternatives works alongside students and families within the Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools district. Our programs are strategically crafted to provide assistance to students who have exhausted the resources available at their designated catchment area schools. Existing students within School District 68 can initiate a referral to Learning Alternatives through their respective catchment schools.

Additionally, students who have not previously been enrolled in a Nanaimo Ladysmith school or have been absent from schooling for an extended duration may direct correspondence to Brett Hancock, Principal of Learning Alternatives, via email.

ABOUT is a vibrant program that incorporates unique learning opportunities and Indigenous cultural education as the foundation to core academics.

Students can expect flexible scheduling and individualized supports as they work towards completing requirements for graduation. ABOUT is a welcoming place for learning, gathering and sharing of talents.

The Intro To Trades (ITT) program is an innovative experience that provides students from grades 10-12 the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning from Red Seal Tradespeople.

The Introduction to  Trades (ITT) program provides students with a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with a teacher and an education assistant to enhance their academic learning. In the mornings, students dedicate their time to coursework, followed by practical application in one of two workshops, outdoor activities, or community engagement in the afternoons. Notably, each semester, ITT students undertake the construction of new “Learning Studios,” which serve as classrooms for younger students within the district. Recent examples of these Learning Studios can be observed at Chase River and Randerson Ridge Elementary Schools.

Ravens Lelum offers a specialized program that believes in prioritizing overall student wellness alongside their course work.  This program empowers young parents to achieve positive academic performance in conjunction with effective parenting abilities. 

Our course work focuses on financial stability, healthy relationships and raising children.  Ravens students can expect one-on-one coaching, mentorship as well as group support.  We offer a safe and welcoming environment for young parents to work towards graduation while their child is being taken care of off site.

At our core, we believe in building trusting student-teacher relationships that are built on mutual respect.

Senior Learning Alternatives (SLA) has historically catered to students in grades 10 through 12; however, we have recently expanded our scope to include students from grades 8 through 12. At SLA, we prioritize diversity and encourage positive self-expression among our students. Our program offers a wide range of academic and elective courses, ensuring flexibility within a structured timetable. We strongly promote work experience and volunteer opportunities, as our dedicated team is committed to assisting students in realizing their full potential.

Take a Hike empowers youth with high quality education, intentional and continuous clinical counselling and outdoor experiential learning.

Take a Hike is a comprehensive Grade 8-12 alternative high school program designed to utilize the outdoors and adventure as tools for engaging vulnerable youth in both learning and community involvement, all while offering crucial mental health support. Within this program, a dedicated full-time clinical counselor is integrated into the classroom environment to provide essential support to students. This proactive approach aims to help students overcome various barriers that may hinder their social and academic success, ultimately guiding them towards high school graduation.

The FLOW (Family Learning Opportunity and Wellness) program is a School District 68 Tier 3 program coordinated through Learning Alternatives.

The FLOW program is meticulously crafted to offer social-emotional and mental health support to academically inclined students who face challenges attending traditional brick-and-mortar high schools within our district due to their current mental health circumstances. FLOW’s site provides a school environment intentionally designed to minimize stimuli, featuring no bells or block rotations. This deliberate setup aims to alleviate many of the anxiety triggers experienced by students, fostering a conducive space for their academic and personal growth.
